Roofing in Jefferson City: what local homeowners should know
Most people in Jefferson City remember the night of May 22, 2019. Just before midnight, an EF-3 tornado with winds near 160 mph tracked more than 32 miles from near Eldon through Cole County and into the southwest side of the capital. The National Weather Service recorded 33 injuries and no deaths. The tornado damaged warehouses, totaled at least 750 cars at a dealership and tore through residential areas near downtown before crossing the Missouri River into Callaway County.
Tornadoes are not the only risk. On June 18, 2011, the NOAA storm record notes a wide swath of large hail across Jefferson City, “especially over the western half of town.” On May 7, 2024, winds estimated near 81 mph brought down trees and blew out second-story windows on a house. A hailstorm can leave damage you can’t see from the ground, so get a close inspection after a storm.
Jefferson City’s housing is older than many of its neighbors. Census data puts the median home here at 1978, and more than half were built before 1980. In older neighborhoods like Old Munichburg, south of downtown, chimneys and flashing deserve extra attention. Older attics also often need better ventilation when the roof is replaced.

FAQ
My roof was replaced after the 2019 tornado. Should I have it checked? Yes, especially if it’s been through hail or high wind since. Many southwest-side roofs were likely replaced in a short window after May 22, 2019, when demand was high. An inspection of the flashing, vents and edges will show whether that work is holding up.
