Volatile temperature cycles weaken Holts Summit roofs
Holts Summit properties face a combination of ridge-top winds and river-valley humidity. This environment accelerates algae growth and compromises shingle adhesives, making roofs more likely to suffer wind-lift and moisture intrusion during the volatile spring and summer months.

Roofing in Holts Summit: what local homeowners should know
Holts Summit got its name from its location. Early settlers called it the highest point between there and the Missouri River, and the town sits at about 804 feet, seven miles northeast of Jefferson City. It was only incorporated in 1973, and most of its homes are newer still. Census data puts the median Holts Summit home at 2002. More than half of homes were built in 2000 or later, and about 570 went up in the 2000s alone.
Your first roof may be due. If your home was built in the early 2000s and still has its original shingles, the roof is now more than 20 years old. Common signs it is near the end: granules collecting in gutters and downspouts, shingles curling at the edges, and dark streaks or soft spots. A free inspection can tell you whether you need repairs or should start planning a replacement.
Trees are the main storm risk here. The NOAA storm record shows the pattern. On August 16, 2017, winds blew down numerous trees between Holts Summit and Fulton, and some fell onto homes. In June 2018, more trees came down around town. On December 10, 2021, winds knocked a large tree down at Highway AA and Platinum Road. Trees planted in yards 20 years ago may now reach the roofline, so check what’s growing over your house.
Hail does hit. On March 14, 2025, NOAA logged 1.5-inch hail in Holts Summit, the largest logged in town since at least 2006. If you haven’t had your roof looked at since then, it’s worth doing.
Big storms pass close by. The May 22, 2019 EF-3 tornado that hit Jefferson City crossed the Missouri River and ended in southern Callaway County near Railwood Golf Club. In April 2025, an EF-2 tornado damaged a home’s roof near Guthrie in Callaway County.
Midwest Roofing has been in business since 2008. It is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor with a 10-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ
When was the last big hail in Holts Summit? NOAA’s storm record lists 1.5-inch hail in Holts Summit on March 14, 2025, the largest logged in town since at least 2006. Hail that size can bruise shingles without obvious signs from the ground, so a close inspection is a good idea.
My house was built around 2005. Do I need a new roof yet? Possibly. Many Holts Summit homes were built in the 2000s, so their original roofs are now around 20 years old. Look for granules in the gutters, curling shingles or leaks in the attic, and get an inspection before deciding.
