Should a roof replaced after the 2019 tornado be checked now?
Yes, especially if it has been through hail or high wind since. The May 22, 2019 EF-3 tornado hit the southwest side of Jefferson City, and many roofs there were likely replaced in a short window when demand was high. An inspection of the flashing, vents, edges and nailing shows whether that work is holding up.
The National Weather Service recorded peak winds near 160 mph, a path more than 32 miles long from near Eldon, and 33 injuries. If you bought a house on that side of town, ask the seller for the roof install date, or let us estimate the roof age during the inspection.
Why do older ranch roofs in Jefferson City leak along walls and chimneys?
About 7,465 Jefferson City homes, close to four in ten, were built between 1950 and 1979, and many are ranch houses with long, low roofs. Lower-pitched roofs drain more slowly, so worn flashing along walls and around chimneys usually fails first. On a house reroofed before, old overlays can also hide soft decking underneath.
In older neighborhoods like Old Munichburg, south of downtown, brick chimneys and step flashing deserve extra attention. Older attics also often need better ventilation, which we check from inside during every free roof inspection.
What building code applies to roof work in Jefferson City?
Jefferson City has adopted the 2018 International Residential Code, with local amendments. Whether a particular roof job needs a permit depends on the scope of work, so ask us before work starts or call the city Building Regulations Division at 573-634-6410. Homes north of the river in Callaway County follow county rules.
Do you repair roofs on duplexes and small rental buildings in Jefferson City?
Yes. About 18% of Jefferson City homes are in buildings with two to four units, so one roof repair can affect several households. We plan the timing with tenants in mind and send photos and video of the problem and the finished repair, which helps owners keep records and handle any insurance claim.
Has Jefferson City had hail as well as tornadoes?
Yes. NOAA logged 2-inch hail in Jefferson City on June 13, 2011, and five days later a wide swath of hail up to 1.75 inches fell across town, mostly on the west side. On May 7, 2024, winds near 81 mph brought down trees and blew out second-story windows on a house.
Hail bruises and lifted shingles do not always leak right away. If an inspection finds storm damage, see how our storm damage restoration and claim help works.
