Severe Eldon winds and heavy hail destroy roofs fast
As storms move from the plains toward the Lake, Eldon properties face violent straight-line winds and large hail. These repetitive weather events strip the protective granules from shingles, leaving the asphalt core exposed to the sun and causing rapid, widespread roof failure.

Roofing in Eldon: what local homeowners should know
Eldon isn’t a lake town. It’s a year-round, owner-occupied railroad town about 12 miles north of Bagnell Dam, and its houses are older than anywhere else in our Lake market. Census estimates put the median Eldon home’s construction year at 1974. In Osage Beach and Lake Ozark it’s around 1990. Many Eldon homes are on their second or third roof.
That age shapes what we look for. On a house built in the 1960s or 70s, the shingles are often the easy part. The questions are underneath:
- Decking: is it plank or plywood, and has it gone soft at the eaves?
- Layers: has an older roof been covered over instead of torn off?
- Ventilation: does the attic vent at all? Many homes from that era were built with little intake at the soffit.
We check all three before we price a job, so there are no surprises on tear-off day.
Eldon has also had real storm damage. On May 22, 2019, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado with winds up to 104 mph. It touched down west of the Eldon Country Club, damaged numerous homes across the south and east sides of town, crossed Highway 54 twice and went on to hit Jefferson City. On April 18, 2024, ping-pong-ball-size hail fell in town, and NOAA recorded minor roof and vehicle damage. If your roof went through either storm and nobody has looked at it since, it’s worth a check. Hail bruises don’t always leak right away.
Eldon gets about 45 inches of precipitation in an average year and has seen temperatures as low as −28°F. Freeze-thaw cycles are hard on cracked shingles, loose nails and worn pipe boots.

My house was built in the 1970s. Will I need new decking? Not always, but older Eldon homes often have soft or damaged decking, or more than one layer of shingles. We check during the inspection and tell you before the job starts, so the price you approve covers what the roof actually needs.
Was my area hit by the 2019 tornado? NOAA’s report says the May 22, 2019 tornado damaged numerous homes across the southern and eastern sections of Eldon. If you’re in that part of town and haven’t had a roof inspection since, we can check for loose or creased shingles and lifted flashing.
