How often does Columbia get damaging hail?
More often than most people remember. From 2006 to 2026, NOAA logged about 70 hail reports with a Columbia location in Boone County. That includes 3-inch hail in March 2006, baseball-size hail along I-70 in north Columbia in September 2012, baseball-size hail across town in April 2013 and 2-inch hail in March 2023.
| Date | What NOAA recorded in Columbia |
|---|---|
| Mar 12, 2006 | 3-inch hail |
| Sep 7, 2012 | Baseball-size (2.75 in) hail across north Columbia along I-70 |
| Apr 17, 2013 | Baseball-size (2.75 in) hail across Columbia |
| Mar 31, 2023 | Hail up to 2 inches over about 25 minutes; siding damage on numerous homes |
| Apr 20, 2025 | EF-1 tornado from Rangeline Road across US-63; church roof damaged by 81 mph winds |
| May 18, 2026 | 82 mph gust at Columbia Regional Airport; trees and power lines down |
My roof looks fine from the ground. Do I still need a hail inspection?
Yes. Hail damage often does not show from the street. In the March 31, 2023 storm, NOAA recorded hail up to two inches across the Columbia metro, plus broken windows and siding damage on numerous homes. Bruised shingles and lost granules can take a year or more to turn into a leak.
What happens during a Columbia hail damage inspection?
We climb the roof and inspect it by hand, check shingles, vents, flashing and gutters, and go into the attic to look for leaks. You get photos and a video tour of what we find. If you file a claim, your sales representative meets the adjuster at your home to walk the roof together.
Once a claim is approved, a customer success representative helps with paperwork and scheduling. Read more about our free roof inspection and our storm damage restoration process.
Does a hail replacement in Columbia need a permit?
Inside city limits, yes. Columbia lists re-roofing as a typical use of its Residential Alteration Permit, which a licensed contractor or an owner-occupant can pull, and the city builds to the 2024 International Building Codes. Homes outside city limits fall under Boone County. City questions go to Building and Site Development at 573-874-7474.
What about wind and tree damage after storms like Easter 2025?
On April 20, 2025, an EF-1 tornado tracked from Rangeline Road past Albert-Oakland Park and across Highway 63, and a second EF-1 east of Hinkson Creek destroyed the Columbia Recycling Facility building. A large tree has also pulled live power lines onto a Columbia home. Wind and falling limbs cause many storm repairs here.
When a storm lets water in, we tarp the roof to protect the inside of the house until repairs can be made. For smaller fixes, see roof repair.
I rent out a Columbia house. Who should arrange the inspection?
The owner should. Fewer than half of Columbia homes are owner-occupied, and tenants in an older rental near campus often will not notice a slow leak until a ceiling stains. Schedule an inspection after every major hailstorm and keep the dated photos and video, which help if you need to file a claim later.
