Fulton humidity and hail jeopardizes roofs
Fulton homes face a combination of high Missouri River Valley humidity and erratic storm patterns. This moisture-rich environment accelerates algae growth and weakens shingle adhesives, making roofs more susceptible to wind-lift and leaks during the heavy thunderstorms common to Callaway County.
Fulton’s local roofing partner
Our 360º digital inspections provide Fulton homeowners with a clear report on their roof’s health. With a 10-year workmanship warranty, we ensure your property is guarded against the heavy rain and temperature fluctuations that challenge Mid-Missouri roofs.
Roofing in Fulton: what local homeowners should know
Fulton is the Callaway County seat and home to Westminster College, William Woods University and the National Churchill Museum. Its housing is older than most of Mid-Missouri: Census data puts the median Fulton home at 1969, and about two of every three homes were built before 1980. The Court Street Historic Residential District and Fulton’s Downtown Brick District are both on the National Register.
Here is what that means for your roof.
Older homes need a closer look at the details. On a 1950s or 1960s house, leaks often start at flashing, chimneys and valleys, not in the middle of the roof. Older attics may also lack the ventilation today’s shingles need to last. A good inspection covers the attic as well as the roof.
Trees are a real risk. On August 16, 2017, the NOAA storm record notes that winds blew down numerous trees between Holts Summit and Fulton, and some fell onto homes in both towns. On May 7, 2024, winds near 75 mph southeast of Fulton destroyed a garage and snapped a power pole. Have large limbs over your roof trimmed before spring.
Tornadoes have come close. On April 17, 2026, a brief EF-0 tornado southwest of town partially lifted the roof of the Fulton airport before dissipating just west of Fulton. A year earlier, on April 20, 2025, an EF-2 near Guthrie in Callaway County tore a large section of roof off a home. Hail is part of the picture too: on March 1, 2007, golf-ball hail from southwest of Fulton toward Williamsburg damaged roofs and vehicles.
Many Fulton homes are rentals. Census data shows about half of homes are owner-occupied. If you own a rental, a written inspection report with photos helps you plan repairs and deal with insurance.
Midwest Roofing has been in business since 2008, is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, and offers a 10-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ
I own a rental in Fulton. What should I get after a storm? Get a written inspection with photos of the roof, flashing, gutters and attic. About half of Fulton homes are rentals, and a dated report helps you prioritize repairs, keep tenants dry and support an insurance claim if needed.
Has Fulton actually had tornado damage? Yes, but the recent ones were brief. On April 17, 2026, an EF-0 tornado southwest of Fulton partially lifted the roof of the Fulton-Elton Hensley Memorial Airport before lifting just west of town. Straight-line winds and falling trees have caused more home damage here, including in 2017 and 2024.
