Willard hail and storm cycles cause hidden water damage

Willard properties sit in a high-impact storm corridor. Frequent hail events bruise shingle matting and strip away protective granules, while high Ozark winds compromise seal strips. This combination leads to rapid shingle degradation and attic moisture issues during the spring rainy season.

Roofing in Willard: what local homeowners should know

Willard took the biggest hail in the Springfield area on April 28, 2026. At 11:45 that morning, a spotter five miles south-southeast of town measured a 4-inch hailstone, the largest report near any town we serve around Springfield. Hail that size can split shingles, crack skylights and dent metal roofing. If you live on Willard’s south side, toward Springfield, and haven’t had your roof inspected since that day, put it on the list.

Hail isn’t Willard’s only storm history. The National Weather Service has documented tornadoes at or near Willard on two dates since 2012:

  • October 13, 2012: a brief tornado touched down on the southwest side of town and tracked about half a mile.
  • April 30, 2019: two EF-1 tornadoes with estimated 100 mph winds. One passed just north of Willard. The other, four to five miles northeast, did substantial damage to a farmhouse and outbuildings.

A town of 1990s and 2000s roofs. Census data put Willard’s median home at 1998. About 60% of homes were built between 1990 and 2009, and relatively few since 2010. Many homes in town still have their first roof, or are on their second. Either way, many of those roofs have now been through two decades of Ozarks hail and wind.

Check the whole house, not just the shingles. After big hail, look at the “soft metals”: gutters, downspouts, roof vents and the caps on furnace flues. Dents there are easy to see from the ground, and they’re good evidence for an insurance adjuster.

Midwest Roofing has served Missouri homeowners since 2008. We’re an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor with a 10-year workmanship warranty.

Has your Willard roof been with you since move-in day?

For many owners, yes. Willard homeowners tend to stay put. The median owner moved in around 2011, and 45% moved in before 2010, according to Census estimates (ACS 2020-2024). Since most homes in town date to the 1990s and 2000s, a lot of owners have lived under the same roof for most of its life, or put the current one on themselves.

Living in one house for a long time is an advantage when it comes to the roof. You may know the year it went on, who installed it, and every storm and repair since. That history is worth writing down. Pull together the install date, the shingle brand and color, any warranty paperwork, and records of past claims or repairs. An inspector or adjuster can do a lot more with that than with a guess.

There is one catch. When you see the same roof every day, slow changes are hard to notice. Granules wash into the gutters a little at a time. A ridge cap loosens one season and lifts the next. Taking a few photos of each side of the roof once a year, from the same spots, makes it easier to see what has changed.

If your roof went on when you moved in during the 1990s or 2000s, it is likely 20 years old or more. An inspection now gives you a baseline with photos and video, so you can plan the next roof on your own schedule. (Willard is a small town, so these Census estimates have wide margins of error.)

What do Willard homeowners ask about their roofs?

Was Willard really hit that hard by the April 2026 hail?

Yes. The National Weather Service’s storm page lists a 4.00-inch hail report five miles south-southeast of Willard. It also lists 1.75-inch hail four miles south-southeast. Damage varies street to street, so a roof inspection is the only way to know for sure.

How do I tell hail damage from normal wear?

Hail usually leaves random, roughly round marks where granules are knocked off, sometimes with a soft spot underneath. Normal wear looks more even across the roof. Dented gutters and vents on the same side of the house point to hail.

Which Willard neighborhoods do you serve?

We serve homes throughout Willard, including Hoffman Hills, Augusta Heights, Whispering Oak Estates, Bell Estates, Cedar Ridge and West Ridge. We’ll come out for a free inspection and give you photos and video of the whole roof, so you can see the condition for yourself.

Is fall storm season something to worry about in Willard?

Yes. Spring gets the attention, but Willard’s storm history includes fall. On October 13, 2012, a brief tornado touched down on the southwest side of town, according to the National Weather Service. Fall storms can loosen shingles right before winter, when repairs are harder to schedule. A quick inspection in October or November catches lifted tabs and loose flashing before snow and ice arrive.

Can you help with an insurance claim for the April 2026 hail in Willard?

Yes, we help homeowners with insurance claims. Start by noting the date, April 28, 2026. The National Weather Service recorded 4-inch hail five miles south-southeast of Willard that morning and 1.75-inch hail four miles south-southeast. We’ll inspect the roof and document the damage with photos and video. Then we’ll walk you through what your adjuster will want to see.
