Straight-line wind gusts peel back shingle seals on Republic roofs
Republic sits in a high-wind corridor where straight-line gusts frequently lift shingle edges and compromise seals. These hidden breaches allow driving rain into the attic, causing structural rot that is often invisible until it’s too late.

Roofing in Republic: what local homeowners should know
On April 28, 2026, Republic took some of the largest hail in the Springfield area. Spotters reported 3.25-inch stones, bigger than baseballs, one mile northeast of town at 11:40 a.m. and one mile west of town at 12:06 p.m. Hail of 2 to 2.75 inches fell east and southeast of town. More hail came through about 1:30 that afternoon. Hail that size can crack shingles and dent gutters, vents and siding. Some damage only shows up after the next hard rain.
Two kinds of Republic houses. Republic has grown fast, from 18,750 residents in 2020 to an estimated 22,404 in 2025, and almost a quarter of its homes were built since 2010. It also has an older core: roughly one in four homes dates to the 1970s or earlier. A 2015 house usually needs a straightforward tear-off. A 1970s house may need deck repair or have more than one layer of old shingles.
Wind still matters. In October 2019, an EF-0 tornado started near Republic and ran toward Wilson’s Creek. NWS noted roof, gutter and siding damage to a home along its path, and metal power poles bent in half southeast of town. Even weak tornadoes can lift shingles along the edges of a roof.
Insurance timing. If you filed a claim for the 2026 hail, keep your adjuster’s report and photos together. They help if more damage turns up later or a second storm hits before repairs are done.

FAQ
How do I know if the April 2026 hail damaged my roof? Hail damage can be hard to see from the ground. Look for dented gutters, downspouts and metal vents. Check for shingle granules collecting at the end of downspouts and for spots on the siding or window wraps. If you see any of those, have the roof itself inspected.
