Frequent Ozark hail and river humidity cause rapid shingle decay
Ozark homes are frequently positioned in high-impact hail zones. Combined with the rising humidity from the Finley River valley, these weather patterns cause shingles to swell and degrade. Undetected hail bruising often leads to sudden leaks during the heavy spring rainy season.
The Ozark roofing standard
Protect your investment with a 360º digital inspection that catches hail damage before it compromises your attic. We provide Ozark homeowners with a 10-year workmanship warranty, ensuring your roof survives the cycle of heavy Ozark storms and high-intensity summer heat.
Roofing in Ozark: what local homeowners should know
Ask longtime Ozark residents about storms and many will name April 30, 2019. That evening an EF-2 tornado, with peak winds the National Weather Service estimated at 134 mph, touched down two miles north of Ozark. It tracked about 10 miles into southeast Greene County. NWS reported numerous homes heavily damaged and a few destroyed. A separate report described roofs torn off homes near Highway NN and East Waterford Boulevard in north Ozark. Homes repaired quickly after that storm are now seven years old. That’s a good time to check whether those repairs are holding up.
Newer homes, more shared roofs. Ozark’s housing is young: the median home was built in 2002, and more than one in five homes has gone up since 2010. Ozark also has more townhomes and duplexes than most nearby towns, about one home in five. On attached homes, one roof often covers two or more owners. Before anyone replaces half of a shared roof, the neighbors and any HOA should agree on shingle color, style and timing, or the line between old and new will show for years.
Water is part of the picture. The Finley River runs through town. NWS records show it reached record levels in a September 1993 flash flood. A roofer can’t stop a flood, but the roof and gutters control where rainwater lands. On lower lots near the river and creeks, downspouts that empty onto saturated ground can put water against the foundation. Check where yours discharge.
Hail was lighter here in 2026, but not absent. During the April 28, 2026 storm, spotters reported 1-inch hail just west of Ozark. Most of the larger stones fell north and west of Springfield. One-inch hail rarely punches through shingles. It can knock granules loose, though, and that shortens a roof’s life.

FAQ
I live in a townhome or duplex in Ozark. Can I replace just my side of the roof? Often yes, but coordinate first. Check your HOA covenants for shingle color and style rules, and talk with your neighbor. Matching shingles and tying into the shared ridge cleanly is much easier when both sides are planned together.
My roof was repaired after the 2019 tornado. Should I have it checked? Yes, especially if repairs were rushed during the backlog after the storm. An inspection can confirm that patched areas match and seal with the original shingles. It also checks flashing and decking that were touched during the repair.
