Wind and falling trees are the biggest risk to Laurie roofs
Laurie homes are exposed to aggressive winds moving across the Gravois Arm. These weather patterns, combined with high lakefront humidity, cause shingles to brittle and fail. Even minor installation gaps can lead to major interior damage during heavy, wind-driven rain events.
Laurie’s reliable roofing defense
We understand the unique roofing conditions of Laurie. We provide 360º digital inspections that account for specific wind-lift and moisture issues. Whether you have a primary residence or a vacation getaway, our 10-year protection plan lets you enjoy the lake without worrying about the next storm.
Roofing in Laurie: what local homeowners should know
Laurie started as a grocery and filling station at Highway 5 and Route O in 1937 and became a city in 1966. It’s still a town of people who live here year-round. About three of every four occupied homes in Laurie are owner-occupied, the highest share of any town we serve at the Lake. Most Laurie homeowners plan to keep their house a long time, so a roof is a long-term decision.
Laurie sits on a wooded ridge, not on the water. The town is about two miles north of the lake, so roofs here face a different risk than the lakefront: trees. On June 3, 2025, NOAA recorded thunderstorm gusts of at least 70 mph that “downed numerous trees in the Gravois Mills and Laurie areas,” with some trees landing on homes. Two brief EF-1 tornadoes north of Sunrise Beach in May 2017 uprooted many trees just a few miles away.
What that means for your roof:
- Look up. Big limbs over the house are the most common way a Laurie roof goes from fine to emergency in one storm. Have dead or overhanging limbs trimmed before spring storm season.
- Clean gutters in late fall. On wooded lots, leaves pack gutters fast, and backed-up water can rot the fascia and the roof edge.
- Check moss and shade. North-facing slopes under heavy tree cover stay damp, which shortens shingle life.
Hail is part of the picture too. NOAA logged tennis-ball-size hail at the Gravois Mills airport, right next to Laurie, on May 26, 2024. Softball-size hail fell in nearby Sunrise Beach in May 2011.
Laurie’s median home was built around 1991, so many houses have older roofs that may be due for a first or second replacement.
Midwest Roofing has been in business since 2008. We’re headquartered in Eldon off US-54, we’re an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, and our work carries a 10-year workmanship warranty.

Is my Laurie home from the 1980s or 1990s ready for its next roof?
Quite possibly. Census estimates show 271 of Laurie’s 582 homes, about 47%, were built between 1980 and 1999. Those houses are now roughly 27 to 46 years old. Many are already on their second roof, and some original or early replacement roofs are still hanging on. Another third of Laurie’s homes were built in 2000 or later and are moving toward their first replacement (ACS 2020-2024).
| Housing in Laurie | ACS 2020-2024 |
|---|---|
| Homes (housing units) | 582 |
| Built before 1980 | 20.3% |
| Built 1980 to 1999 | 46.6% (271 homes) |
| Built 2000 or later | 33.2% |
| Seasonal or vacation homes | 7.6% (estimate, margin of error +/-36 homes) |
| Median value, owner-occupied home | $187,200 |
Only about 8% of Laurie homes are counted as seasonal, so most are lived in year-round by people who plan to stay. If that’s you, a re-roof on a 1980s or 1990s house is a chance to fix things the original roof didn’t get right:
- Ventilation balance. Many homes from those decades have vents near the ridge but blocked or undersized vents at the soffits. Fresh air has to come in low for the vents up top to work.
- Leak barrier at the eaves and valleys. These are the spots where water and ice collect, and extra protection there helps a new roof last.
- Pipe boots and flashing. Rubber pipe boots crack in the sun after years of exposure and are a common source of slow leaks.
- Old layers. If a past roof was laid over the original instead of torn off, both layers should come off this time.
For the newer third of town, a roof from the 2000s is now around 15 to 25 years old. A free inspection with photos and video will show whether yours has years left or is ready to plan for.

What do Laurie homeowners ask about their roofs?
A tree limb fell on my roof. What should I do first?
Make sure everyone is safe and stay out of rooms where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos, then call your insurance company and a roofer. Don’t climb onto the roof to move the limb yourself. A roofer can tarp the opening once the tree is removed.
Is my Laurie home exposed to lake winds?
Less than lakefront homes. Laurie sits on a ridge about two miles from the water. The bigger wind risk here is trees: NOAA’s June 2025 report for the Laurie area describes 70 mph gusts bringing trees down onto homes.
Do you cover Laurie and the rest of the Westside?
Yes. We work all along Route 5 on the lake’s Westside, which locals count as Greenview, Hurricane Deck, Sunrise Beach, Laurie and Gravois Mills. In Laurie, that means everywhere from the old Highway 5 and Route O crossroads to neighborhoods like Woodhaven Estates. If you’re looking for a roofer in Laurie, we’re headquartered in Eldon off US-54 and have been in business since 2008.
Has hail actually damaged roofs around Laurie?
Yes. On April 15, 2012, NOAA logged 1.75-inch hail at the Gravois Mills airport, about a mile from Laurie, with minor roof and vehicle damage. The same spot saw tennis-ball-size hail on May 26, 2024. Hail that size can bruise shingles without an obvious leak, so a free inspection with photos and video is a good idea if nobody has checked your roof since then.
My Laurie house was built around 1991. Should I repair the roof or replace it?
It depends on what’s up there now, and an inspection will tell you. Laurie’s median home was built around 1991, so an original roof would be about 35 years old, well past its expected life. If it’s already been replaced once, a repair may do. We’ll show you photos and video and give you a straight answer. New roofs we install come with a 10-year workmanship warranty.
